NEW OFFERING -  SPRING 2015

“NEW!” Afro-Cuban Music and Dance Traditions
Instructor: Igor Iwanek
Cost: $90
Dates: Wednesdays, May 20-June 17 (5 class mtgs.)
Time: 6:15-7:15 p.m.

This high energy course will be a cross between a dance class and a world music class. We will not only explore the intoxicating rhythms of Latin music, learn to understand and perform them with a set of musical sticks called “claves,” but we will also explore the basics of such dances as Mambo and Cha Cha. If you are a beginner dancer, that will be a great introduction to the world of Latin dances. If you are a seasoned dancer, your understanding of the intricacies of Latin music itself will increase greatly.

Past class offerings

Music and Mysticism
Instructor: Igor Iwanek
Cost: $90
Dates: Tuesdays, January 27 – February 17 (4 class mtgs.)
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Music is a universal language people have used ever since the inception of humanity to connect with their emotions in order to try to come closer to the divine, to make the mysteries of living more intelligible. Music has always been present in almost every culture as a vital part of ritual. We'll learn about African, Central Asian, and Pan-American rites that deeply relied on music. We'll understand the principles that underline various forms of chanting across the globe, from the approach of medieval monks to the overtone chants of Mongolian nomads. We'll study the Greek philosophers' approach to music and find out why it was esteemed (unlike today) as one of the main subjects worthy of study at school. We'll pay a musical visit to various cultures that use music in the practice of "Remembering God". We'll also experience first hand how famous composers drew from these mystical experiences to create music of freshness and deep spiritual significance. All that will be accompanied by stimulating readings on the topic.

Orchestra, Color, Instrumental Personalities and Music
Instructor: Igor Iwanek
Cost: $90
Dates: Thursdays, January 29 – February 19 (4 class mtgs.)
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Have you ever been to a instrumental petting zoo and left overwhelmed with excitement? Do you know what a mouth organ, hurdy-gurdy or a harmonium is? Have you ever wondered about the myriad of timbres musical instruments produce? ... or how the clarinet of Benny Goodman sounds different from that of a Tchaikovsky symphony?
With the help of classical, jazz and folk music we'll get to know the sounds and musical personalities of various instruments. By exploring and understanding the palette of musical colors we'll prepare you for hearing the Bravo IV concert of Mississippi Symphony Orchestra (happening on 2/21 - right after the end of our session) with "new ears" and greater depth.
